3D designs and illusions on streets across London are being considered as a way to slow traffic and protect people walking.
City Matters recently reported that City Corporation leaders have asked whether Ludgate junction could benefit from 3D traffic calming measures, such as a zebra-crossing designed to encourage drivers and riders to slow down.
3D Designs have recently become of interest across the UK since Westminster City Council became the first local authority to trial an optical illusion at the junction of High Street and Wellington Place in St John’s Wood.
The design "gives the appearance of a raised road, creating the illusion that pedestrians are floating across whichever side drivers approach it from."
It was designed to catch drivers’ attention, forcing them to be more attentive and slow down, which would in turn help pedestrians cross safely. The crossing has since piqued interest and discussions as London aims to achieve Vision Zero - eliminating all road deaths and casualties by 2041.
