Lunchtime Streets Survey
Lunchtime Streets Survey
23 September 2019
In 2019 we organised three weeks of Lunchtime Streets traffic free events on St Mary in March and August and Chancery Lane in September. We asked people what they thought about the event, their street environment and their support for traffic free streets.
Lunchtime Streets is an event that removes motor traffic from a street over a lunchtime period, so people can enjoy their lunch in a safer and more pleasant environment.
There are 513,000 people who work in the Square Mile of the City of London, which makes it one of the busiest places in the world. This means that at peak times; getting to work, going home and during lunch, the streets are crowded with people.
We closed two of our busiest streets to traffic and opened them up to people to enjoy, food, music, games and extra seating. We surveyed the people on these streets and asked them what they thought.
The survey found some other interesting views about the event, such as people like food stalls which is not unsurprising at lunch times, music and seating also seem to be pretty popular.
Most importantly, over 90% of people support traffic free lunch hours, and over 60% of people supported pedestrianisation of each of the streets between 7am – 7pm. Over 90% of people would support other temporary street closures across the City to enhance the pedestrian environment.
Realising this vision will require a lot of work, but what we know is that most people who work in the City support traffic free environments.
